Diabetes:

For a student using insulin, diabetes must be managed 24/7, including the many hours spent at school, on field trips and in extra-curricular activities.  Our school nurses are trained to assist your child with management of their condition while at school.  As a parent we highly encourage you to be involved in your students care plans.  Somethings that you can do to assist us in care for you child while at school.

                       *   At the begining of each school year, contact the nurse or administrator of your childs school to make sure they are aware

of your childs condition.  Also let the school know if you wish to set up a 504 plan, or a meeting with your students

teachers, to discuss any specific needs your student may require.

                       *   Have  your childs endocrinologist fill out a Diabetic Medical Management Plan (DMMP) and provide a new copy at the

                            beginning of each school year.

                       *   If you child's insulin needs change throughout the year, remember to notify the nurse of the changes.  We ask that                                         parents send a signed note with any dosage changes that may occur.

                       *   We highly encourage our diabetic students to keep an extra supply of snacks and diabetic supplies at their school.

                       *   Talk with your child about their symptoms of hypo/hyperglycemia.  Encouraged them if they feel these symptoms to have

someone escort them to the nurses office.

*Special consideration:  If your student will be attending any feild trips during the school year, we encourage parents to come along to assist your student with their medical needs.  If you are unavailable to attend, notify your school nurse, and arrangements can be made to have a nurse present.  (The school nurse does not attend extra-cirricular activities in a professional capasity)
